On Emergency Medicine
“I was shocked at how much I liked med school. I liked the idea of healing acutely ill people and being able to handle myself in any and all situations.”

On Managing Mount Sinai’s COVID-19 Response
“I felt the weight of the importance of getting this right for the people of New York City and for our people on the front lines taking care of people who were sick and scared.”

On Leadership
I believe the secret to leading is listening. Leadership is about recognizing the talent around you, stepping back, and allowing people to shine. People are capable of amazing things if you support, develop, and trust them.

On Management
Management is most successful when we break down silos and build multidisciplinary teams. Collaboration, respect, and communication create a culture where the best ideas can surface.

On the Value of Mentorship
I’ve had great mentors along the way, people who helped shape my belief that I can make a difference and deserve a seat at the table. I have tried to repay that incredible gift by mentoring others and continue to believe that is something all leaders should do.

On Emergency Medicine
Emergency physicians stand at the front door 24/7 and welcome anyone and everyone in. I wanted to help people in crisis. Whether they need life-saving medical care, diagnostic certainty, or relief from mental or physical pain, we’re the safety net.
The ER serves as a window into society. You are able to see the larger issues that impact people and communities. This vantage point was key to my policy work in Washington, D.C., and my interest in understanding the role of health systems like Mount Sinai in our communities.
On Equitable Care
We have to earn trust. People’s fears are real. The health care system has been unfair to many marginalized populations. I am committed to building that trust.

On Readiness
I worry about the fragility of the health care system. NYC has been the target of terror, climate, and a pandemic. I will continue to work with policy makers to make sure that we can meet the needs of our communities during our darkest times. I will continue to push us to be ready for whatever is next.
On Health Policy Research
The natural extension of seeing the cracks in the health care system was to want to address them. My research focused on examining the upstream drivers of health outcomes and what levers we can pull to change the outcomes.

On Daily Inspiration
People recharge me. After a few decades of emergency and trauma care I’m well aware that the world is full of suffering. But if you look past it, you will see immeasurable kindness and authentic humanity everywhere. The lengths that people will go to in support of each other continually amaze me. There is good everywhere.
